Educational Neuropsychological Evaluation

  • Does your child seem to learn material one day and completely forget what they’ve learned the next?
  • Do you see strokes of brilliance or creativity some days, and very concerning issues related to memory and retention other days?
  • Are you concerned about how your child or teen goes about solving problems or do they seem to have a disorganized approach to doing things?
  • Has your child or teen experienced an injury to the head for which you are concerned about potential learning effects?

Educational Neuropsychological Evaluation

If your concerns extend beyond the question of whether or not your child has a learning disability and you want to learn about their gifts, strengths, and cognitive profile, then the educational neuropsychological evaluation will provide you with the information you need to leverage their strengths, remediate weaknesses, and to develop a treatment plan for any potential disorders or skill deficits related to learning and cognitive processing. The assessments selected are standardized, culturally responsive, and neuroaffirming with the client, not a diagnosis, at the center of the process. An observation is included within 15 miles of the clinic.

The decision to obtain a formal evaluation usually follows a period of ups and downs, uncertainty, and relentless worrying. Some individuals try a number of therapies and other types of assessments in hope that something less serious might be the cause because the idea of potentially having a disorder can sound so stigmatizing and limiting. Some individuals intuitively know there is something going on, but those around them or their school just don’t seem as concerned.

As a parent to a now adult autistic daughter and as a 2e (twice exceptional) individual myself, I recognize the commitment one embarks upon when deciding it’s time to schedule an evaluation. This is a tremendous commitment of time, resources, and hope. Rather than a series of prescriptive hoops to jump through in order to obtain a diagnosis and report, I view testing as a therapeutic process in and of itself, regardless if you are 5 or 55. The evaluation can be a journey of self-discovery through which the child, adolescent, or adult construes a new, more-informed, and forward looking narrative about themselves. The process is compassionate and guided, leading to potentially life changing growth for clients. The process culminates with an hour and a half long discussion, followed by a report two weeks later, and then another discussion to support the internal processes experienced by the individual and family, and to guide the subsequent steps moving forward.
