Specialities:
Being board-certified in both pediatric and adult psychiatry, Dr. Gulino has worked with adults, adolescents, and children who pursue psychiatric treatment for a wide variety of disorders. These include anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, substance abuse, ADHD, pediatric behavioral problems, and autism. His diverse clinical background enables him to effectively treat individuals across the lifespan, with sensitivity to the developmental stage of each patient.
Dr. Gulino emphasizes the importance of accurate diagnosis and a comprehensive treatment plan based on the individual needs of the patient. He begins by taking a full clinical inventory of the patient’s mental health status, along with an assessment of the internal and external factors that may be contributing to the symptoms. This includes a psychiatric assessment with physical, social, and family history components. He places maximum value on really listening to his patients and establishing an honest and trusting doctor-patient alliance, as he believes this connection is essential to effective care and healing.
Once a diagnosis has been determined, Dr. Gulino ensures that his patients fully understand the diagnosis, as well as the prognosis and the field’s established evidence-based treatment recommendations. Treatment options may include medication, therapy, lifestyle changes, or a combination of these interventions. His patients are always fully apprised of any potential risks and benefits of the treatment plan and are involved in the decision-making process from the outset. Then, collaboratively, Dr. Gulino and his patient decide upon a plan that will lead to health, wholeness, and optimal functioning. He believes in empowering his patients through knowledge and participation.
Dr. Gulino graduated from the University of Virginia then attended medical school at Virginia Commonwealth University, followed by a residency in General Psychiatry and a fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the Medical University of South Carolina. Since 2006, Dr. Gulino has worked in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
