Dr. Joseph Gulino, MD

Being board-certified in both pediatric and adult psychiatry, Dr. Gulino has worked with adults, adolescents and children who pursue psychiatric treatment for a wide variety of disorders to include anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, substance abuse, ADHD, pediatric behavioral problems, and autism.

Dr. Gulino emphasizes the importance of accurate diagnosis and a comprehensive treatment plan based on the individual needs of the patient. He begins by taking a full clinical inventory of the patient’s mental health status along with the internal and external factors that contribute to it. This includes a psychiatric assessment with physical, social, and family history components. He places maximum value on really listening to his patients and establishing an honest and trusting doctor-patient alliance. Once a diagnosis has been determined, Dr. Gulino ensures that his patients fully understand the diagnosis as well as the prognosis and the field’s established evidence-based treatment recommendations. Treatment options may include medication, therapy, lifestyle changes, or a combination of these interventions. His patients are always fully apprised of any potential risks and benefits of the treatment plan and are involved in the decision-making process from the outset. Then, collaboratively, Dr. Gulino and his patient decide upon a plan that will lead to health, wholeness, and optimal functioning.

Dr. Gulino graduated from the University of Virginia then attended medical school at Virginia Commonwealth University, followed by a residency in General Psychiatry and a fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the Medical University of South Carolina. Since 2006, Dr. Gulino has worked in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
