Schedule Now

Immediate Openings for adolescents and their families to see if medication is right for you!

Campbell Teen & Family Therapy, Inc. now offers Psychiatric evaluations. Many of our families have had some trouble scheduling a psychiatric evaluation, in these difficult times the need has risen to the point that wait times can be weeks to months.  Then once scheduled, communication with a busy psychiatrist became difficult.

One of the things we pride ourselves in is our collaborative team approach to mental health and communication is a key.  Having an in-house psychiatrist means that we improve our communication.  Our therapist and psychiatrist know what is going on with the client in real time, which is crucial in times of crisis.

We now offer a comprehensive psychiatrist evaluation looking at the whole adolescent. Parents are closely involved and part of the decision making process.  Medication is not for everyone and adolescents' brains are still developing, which means they need to be monitored closely for side effects.  It also means that they need a psychiatrist who specializes in adolescence and understands the unique needs of their developing brains.

What that means is they prescribe with caution.  They will consider all options and not just push medications.  We always try to see if the adolescent responds to therapy first and carefully weigh the costs and benefits of medication.  If we don't believe it is right for your adolescent, we will let you know. Having a psych evaluation does not equal taking medication.  It is a consultation to see if medication can boost the therapy process and get your teen past the critical points in their treatment and well on the way to recovery.

What makes us unique is that we use the team approach.  We meet weekly to discuss each case and include all treatment team members, therapist, dietitians, medical doctors and incorporate the feedback from parents and their school if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q:  Will a psychiatric evaluation be covered by my insurance?
A:  The decision to give a mental health diagnosis to your teen should not be taken lightly.  Once diagnosed, it becomes a permanent part of their medical record.  We leave this decision up to the parents.  Our psychiatrist are not contracted with any insurance companies.  However if you have a PPO Insurance Policy with Out of Network Benefits we are happy to file a claim on your behalf and submit it directly to your insurance company for reimbursement.

Q:  How much does a psychiatric evaluation cost?
A:  Our fees are competitive for the Bay Area at $500 for an intake session (60 minutes) and $250 for a follow up session (30 minutes).

Q:  If we decide not to use our insurance, will the diagnosis be completely private?
A:  Yes, if you make the decision not to use insurance no one will have access to the diagnosis.

Q:  Will my adolescent be pushed to take medications?
A:  No, the decision is always up to the parent, teen and their therapist.  If our psychiatrist does not think that medication is a good fit for your teen, then other treatment options will be given.
