Nelson is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a passion for helping children, teenagers and their families navigate challenging times. He can conduct therapy sessions in English and in Spanish.
Inspired to work with teens once his older child became a teenager, Nelson has a unique understanding of teenagers’ struggles as well as how their issues may reflect problems within the family, such as divorce or mental illness. A guiding principle for Nelson is looking at the client not in isolation but as part of a larger system.
When counseling families, Nelson primarily uses Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Family Systems Theory.
In addition, he sometimes uses a specialized therapy called Family Based Therapy (FBT), which has been shown to be highly effective in treating anorexia. (Here’s a link to an article on its effectiveness: https://med.stanford.edu/news/all-news/2014/09/family-based-therapies-can-treat-anorexia-in-teens--stanford-pac.html)
Since Nelson sees a lot of clients who have experienced trauma, he is trained in two therapy models that treat it – Trauma-Focused CBT and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), both of which have been scientifically proven to help clients recover from a variety of traumatic events.
Prior to joining Campbell Teen & Family Therapy, Inc., Nelson worked in a local outpatient clinic where he provided counseling to children and adults with depression, anxiety, eating disorders, PTSD and other trauma-related issues.
Nelson did his clinical training at Uplift Family Services, which has counseling offices all over Northern California.
